OVERVIEW

“44% of projects fail due to poor planning.” – ZIPDO Education — Project Management Industry Statistics, 2025

With project failure rates estimated between 50% and 70%, organizations can no longer afford to let struggling projects drift. The ability to recognize early warning signs and act decisively is often the difference between costly failure and successful recovery.

The Assessing and Recovering Troubled Projects course equips leaders, project managers, and delivery teams with a practical, proven framework to identify projects at risk, diagnose what has gone wrong, and implement a structured recovery plan that delivers results.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

  • Recognizing the warning signs — how to quickly identify when a project is heading off track.
  • Auditing and reporting — uncovering the real issues behind missed milestones, budget overruns, and stakeholder dissatisfaction.
  • Root cause analysis — separating symptoms from causes and designing targeted, effective solutions.
  • Negotiating the recovery plan — gaining stakeholder alignment and approval for a realistic path forward.
  • Project re-execution and stabilization — resetting governance, controls, and delivery to achieve a successful turnaround.

GETTING IT RIGHT FROM THE START

The course concludes with a focused session on “What to Do Right the First Time.” Drawing on lessons revealed throughout the recovery process, this module provides practical, actionable guidance for setting up projects to succeed from day one — reducing risk, increasing predictability, and improving outcomes across the portfolio.

A Holistic Approach to Project Recovery
Throughout the program, participants will explore the three core drivers of troubled projects:

  • People — leadership, capability, communication, and stakeholder engagement
  • Process — governance, planning, controls, and decision-making
  • Technology — tools, architecture, integration, and delivery complexity

By addressing people, process, and technology together, the course delivers a balanced and comprehensive approach to project recovery — ensuring participants leave with skills they can apply immediately to real-world challenges.
